Blackwater Creek Trail

The Blackwater Creek Trail in Lynchburg, VA is one of the best. It follows the Blackwater Creek through woods and meadows and offers views of the river along the way. The trail is easy to find and good for a relaxing nature hike. You can bring your dog with you on this one, too! There is a three mile paved bike, running, and walking trail that meanders all throughout Lynchburg and connects to the city's Jefferson Heritage Trail system. Along this journey, you can witness the scenery of a waterfall, a vintage railroad tunnel, and a bridge that goes across the James River and connects to Percival's Island. Percival's Island Natural Area

Contrary to what the title implies, Percival's Island is not an island. It is a peninsula. It is a favorite spot for a number of residents of Lynchburg as it has a sweeping view of the James River and the downtown skyline. The trails are a haven for many kinds of wildlife and feature great opportunities to learn about the region's history. There are three beautiful viewpoints to view the water below, in addition to watching deer, foxes, turkeys, coyotes, rabbits, skunks, and opossums in the area. Mountain bike riders can choose from two 16-mile loops, one of which features 11 miles and is a more challenging trail for more experienced riders. There is also a six-mile option, which takes a more leisurely pace. This is new for you, so it would be best to go during the day when you can see better.

Hollins Mill Park

Due to large shade trees, picnic tables, fishing access, and views of the Blackwater Creek and historic Hollins Mill Dam, this place is very popular with families with young children. This place is open from 8 am to 8 pm (with limited hours in the winter). Dogs are not allowed on the trails at Hollins Mill Park but they are welcome off-leash in other parts of the park. There are facilities, including restrooms, drinking water, outdoor grills and fire rings, paved parking lot and handicap accessible trails. Hollins Mill Park has thirteen miles of scenic trails for exploring with excellent views of valley side vegetation and wildlife. For a less strenuous hike, start at the historic Hollins Mill Dam (built in 1894) for wheelchair accessible access to its overlooks for expansive views of the valley.

Mike Donahue Trail

Liberty Mountain Trail System is 1.3 miles long loop is a popular trail. It is open year around. It is kid friendly and has an elevation gain of 91 feet. It takes you to the top of the mountain, where you can see beautiful views of the James River Valley. The view will be better in the fall when the leaves are changing colors!

Peaks View Park Trail

This 5-mile trail in Peaks View Park offers amazing views of the city of Lynchburg and the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond. The trail is mostly easy, with a few moderate sections, and is great for all skill levels. You'll likely see plenty of other hikers, as well as some wildlife, so be sure to bring your camera! If you're feeling ambitious, this is also a good place to bring your pup. Just remember to keep them on leash while they explore the park.

Kemper Station Trail

Kemper Station Trail is one of the best hiking trails in Lynchburg VA for a nature fix. The trailhead is located at the end of Kemper Street, and the trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Ruskin Freer Loop

The Ruskin Freer Loop trail is rated as the most difficult trail in Lynchburg VA. It is three miles long and has steep elevation changes. There are many foot bridges, and the hike offers scenic views of Staunton River Reservoir and Blackwater Creek. If you're looking for an easier challenge than this one, take Fincastle Bridge Loop.

Fincastle Trail Loop

The Fincastle trail loop is one of the best hiking trails in Lynchburg VA. This loop is 4.6 miles long and takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. The trail is well-marked and there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way.
